The transition from summer into fall changes more than the weather. Our routines change, daylight decreases, schedules become more structured, and most of us start spending more time indoors. We may sleep differently, move differently, eat differently, and even drink less water as the temperatures begin to cool.
The body has to adapt to all of these changes.
For many people, that transition happens without too much difficulty. However, if the body is already dealing with inflammation or other underlying stressors, the cumulative effect of these changes can begin to show up in how someone feels quite quickly. Energy may take a hit. Sleep may become less restorative. Old aches or digestive issues are likely to become more noticeable. Sometimes it feels like the body isn't recovering or adapting as well as it was a few months earlier.
I see this often during seasonal transitions, and the answer isn't just that colder weather causes inflammation. There is usually more going on.
Several relatively small things may be changing at approximately the same time. Sleep, stress, movement, hydration, food, sunlight, and environmental exposures can all influence the systems that regulate inflammation. Individually, none of these changes may be significant enough to create an obvious problem. Together, they can increase the total amount of stress the body is being asked to manage.
To understand why that matters, we first need to understand what inflammation actually is.
Irritation Comes Before Inflammation
My way of explaining inflammation begins with what I call the Three I’s:
Irritation → Inflammation → Infection
This is an important sequence. Something first irritates the system. That irritation may be physical, chemical, nutritional, environmental, microbial, metabolic, or emotional. The body responds with inflammation.
Inflammation itself is not inherently bad. It is a protective biochemical response designed to contain damage, recruit immune activity, initiate repair, and restore equilibrium. We need the ability to create inflammation when it is appropriate.
The problem arises when the irritation persists. Inflammatory signaling does not shut off adequately, and the chemical mediators involved in that response can begin influencing tissues beyond the original source of irritation. Barrier integrity can deteriorate, immune regulation can become less efficient, and the biological environment can become more permissive to microbial imbalance or infection.
This is what I mean when I say irritation leads to inflammation, and ongoing inflammation can eventually make the body more vulnerable to infection. That is why trying to reduce inflammation is not always enough. If we don't address what is irritating the body in the first place, we may ease symptoms for a while without changing why they keep coming back.
What Changes When Summer Ends?
September can produce several biological changes at approximately the same time.
During the summer, many people receive more natural light, spend more time outdoors, move more, sweat more, drink more water, eat differently, and operate on a somewhat different schedule. Then fall arrives. Days get shorter, morning light exposure changes, temperatures fall, school begins, work rhythms intensify, and people spend more time indoors.
Physical activity often decreases. Hydration can decline because people no longer feel as hot or thirsty. Food patterns tend to migrate toward heavier, more processed, higher-calorie foods. Exposure to indoor allergens, molds, dust, respiratory viruses, and other irritants also changes.
Each of these factors may be relatively small on its own. The problem is cumulative load. If five or six irritations increase at approximately the same time, the body's inflammatory threshold can be crossed.
Poor sleep is an irritation. Blood-sugar instability is an irritation. Chronic psychological stress is an irritation. Dehydration is an irritation. Excessive alcohol and ultra-processed foods can be irritants. Allergens are irritants. Excessive training without adequate recovery can be an irritant. Microbial exposures can be irritants. Each of these can activate biochemical signaling and contribute to an inflammatory cascade.
This is why inflammation cannot be reduced to one substance that we simply need to eliminate. It is a coordinated biological response. If we want lasting resolution, we have to determine what continues activating that response.
Sleep, Stress, and Light
Sleep disruption is one of the first things I look at when someone begins feeling worse in the fall.
Poor sleep affects cortisol regulation, glucose metabolism, appetite hormones, nervous system activity, inflammatory signaling, and immune function. When you do not get enough quality sleep, the effects go far beyond feeling tired. It can change how your body regulates and responds to stress throughout the day.
Stress can have a similar systems-wide effect. Short-term stress is adaptive. Persistent stress is different. Continuous sympathetic activation can influence digestion, blood pressure, glucose handling, immune function, inflammation, and sleep.
These systems also interact. Poor sleep can increase cravings for sugar and refined carbohydrates. Stress can decrease motivation to exercise. Reduced movement can negatively affect glucose regulation. Blood-sugar instability can contribute additional inflammatory signaling. Increased inflammation can then interfere with sleep.
Once that cycle is established, addressing only one downstream symptom is unlikely to correct the larger problem. We need to interrupt the cycle.
Light exposure is part of that process as well. Seasonal reductions in natural light influence circadian timing, sleep, mood, activity, and, over longer periods, vitamin D status. As daylight decreases, I encourage people to get outside shortly after waking and expose their eyes to natural morning light. In the evening, reducing excessive artificial light and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can help restore a healthier sleep-wake rhythm.
Movement and Hydration
Physical activity often changes gradually as temperatures cool and daylight decreases. People may not realize how much their normal summer activity has declined until they compare what they are doing in September with what they were doing in June or July.
Regular movement influences insulin sensitivity, circulation, lymphatic movement, mitochondrial function, and anti-inflammatory signaling. That does not mean someone who is already exhausted and inflamed needs to begin an intense exercise program. Excessive training without adequate recovery can become another source of irritation.
For many people, walking is an excellent place to begin. Consistent movement supports several of the regulatory systems we are trying to restore without placing excessive additional stress on the body.
Hydration also commonly decreases in the fall. People drink more naturally during hot weather because they are sweating and experiencing thirst more frequently. Once the weather cools, water intake can decline considerably even though the body still depends on adequate fluid and electrolyte balance for circulation, kidney function, gastrointestinal motility, lymphatic movement, and normal cellular chemistry.
When someone comes to me feeling tired, puffy, constipated, achy, or generally unwell in September, hydration is one of the basic areas I want to evaluate.
Food and Blood Sugar
Food patterns also tend to change with the seasons. A sudden increase in sugar, refined carbohydrates, fried foods, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, and excessive caloric intake can increase glycemic instability and metabolic inflammatory signaling.
Again, the cumulative effect matters.
If someone is sleeping poorly, experiencing increased stress, moving less, drinking less water, and eating more processed food at the same time, it becomes difficult to isolate one factor as "the cause." The body is responding to the total biological environment.
When inflammation is elevated, I generally want to simplify that environment. I emphasize whole foods, adequate protein, vegetables, berries, and other nutrient-dense plant foods, healthy fats, fiber-rich foods, herbs, spices, and minimally processed meals. For a period of time, reducing refined sugars, excessive alcohol, fried foods, and ultra-processed foods can help us determine how much those inputs are contributing to the inflammatory load.
Digestive function needs to be considered as part of this, too. If someone is constipated, bloated, refluxing, or poorly digesting food, I want to address it. The intestinal barrier is one of the body's largest interfaces with the outside environment, and chronic gastrointestinal irritation can become an ongoing source of inflammatory signaling.
The Indoor Environment Changes
As temperatures decrease, people spend more time indoors. Windows close, heating systems begin running, and exposure to dust, mold, indoor allergens, and other environmental irritants can change. At the same time, seasonal allergies may increase, and respiratory infections begin circulating more frequently.
For someone whose inflammatory load is already elevated, these additional exposures may be enough to produce symptoms. The specific symptoms will depend partly on where that individual is most vulnerable.
This is why I do not assume that a joint complaint, digestive complaint, sinus problem, headache, and fatigue necessarily represent five completely separate problems. They may have different immediate causes, but I still want to understand what is happening to the person's overall regulatory capacity.
Early Signs That Inflammatory Load Is Increasing
People often associate inflammation with obvious pain, but some of the earlier changes can be subtle.
Recovery is one area I watch closely. Someone wakes up tired despite sleeping. Their muscles remain sore longer after exercise. Their joints feel slightly stiff when they first stand. Their rings feel tighter, or their face looks a little puffier. Digestion slows. Mild sinus pressure develops. Foods that normally don't cause problems suddenly produce symptoms. Mental clarity decreases, cravings increase, or sleep becomes restless.
Another useful sign is reduced tolerance. A person who previously handled one poor night of sleep without much trouble now feels exhausted afterward. One restaurant meal produces bloating for two days. A routine workout creates disproportionate soreness and fatigue.
That reduced tolerance tells us something about adaptive reserve. The body is still functioning, but its margin for error is narrowing. That is an important time to intervene, before the inflammatory load becomes a larger clinical problem.
What I Would Do First
If someone came to me in September feeling achy, tired, puffy, and generally off, I would start with the basics because they regulate an enormous amount of physiology.
For seven to fourteen days, I would simplify the person's biological environment. Restore the sleep-wake rhythm. Get outside shortly after waking and get natural morning light. Reduce excessive artificial light in the evening and establish a consistent sleep schedule.
Restore hydration and appropriate electrolyte and mineral intake when needed. Simplify food and reduce obvious dietary irritants. Move every day without overwhelming the system. Address constipation, bloating, reflux, or other signs of poor digestive function.
I would also look for unnecessary inflammatory inputs. That might include allergens, smoke, alcohol, excessive training, chronic sleep deprivation, environmental exposures, or foods that consistently provoke symptoms.
Finally, I want to reduce the sympathetic load. Deep breathing, prayer, meditation, time outdoors, gentle movement, appropriate manual therapy, and adequate recovery can all help move the body away from constant fight-or-flight physiology.
Before adding twenty interventions, I would rather remove five irritants.
Supporting the Body's Ability to Resolve Inflammation
There are nutrients and botanical compounds I commonly consider when inflammatory signaling is elevated, but I always distinguish between supporting the inflammatory response and correcting what is driving it.
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions and plays important roles in neuromuscular function, glucose regulation, energy metabolism, and normal inflammatory regulation. Zinc supports epithelial integrity, antioxidant defenses, and immune function. Selenium supports glutathione-related antioxidant enzymes as well as thyroid and immune physiology.
Vitamin D also plays important immunomodulatory roles, although supplementation should ideally be based on the individual rather than assuming everyone requires the same amount.
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are useful because the body can use them to generate specialized pro-resolving mediators. This illustrates an important part of inflammation that is frequently overlooked. Healthy inflammation needs to be properly regulated, not just suppressed. The body also needs the biochemical tools required to resolve inflammation appropriately after the threat has passed.
I also frequently use botanical compounds such as curcumin, ginger, and Boswellia when appropriate. Foods provide many of these same supportive materials. Colorful vegetables, berries, herbs, spices, extra-virgin olive oil, fish, high-quality protein, fiber-rich foods, and adequate minerals provide raw materials used in antioxidant defense, immune regulation, tissue repair, and inflammatory resolution.
But none of these replaces the need to identify what is driving the inflammatory cascade.
Give Your Body a Chance to Adjust
Feeling different as the seasons change does not necessarily mean something new is wrong. Sometimes it is a sign that your body is being asked to adapt to more than it was a few months ago.
The good news is that many of the things that support that adaptation are also the basics we have talked about throughout this article. Get outside and get natural light. Protect your sleep. Keep moving as the days get shorter. Stay hydrated even when you are not as thirsty. Pay attention to what you are eating, how well you are digesting it, and whether stress is beginning to take over too much of your day.
You do not have to change everything at once. Look at what has changed in your life since summer and start with the areas that need the most attention. A few consistent adjustments can reduce the overall load your body is managing and give it more of what it needs to regulate inflammation effectively.
Fall is a transition, and your body is transitioning with it. Supporting that process early can make a significant difference in how you feel through the fall and into the winter months.
