Description

Lemons, which are familiar to everyone, grow on evergreen trees that can reach up to 19 feet high, although many are much shorter. Lemon trees are lovely as landscape features and have pale green leaves and highly perfumed white or pink flowers. One lemon tree can produce up to 1,500 lemons each year.

The lemon tree originated in Asia and made its way to Greece in the second century AD. It now grows throughout the Mediterranean and other warm climate regions and today Florida and California are the major producers. Lemon peel was used in the Roman empire to fragrance clothing and repel insects. In the late 17th century a pharmacist named Nicholas Lemery recognized the medicinal value of the fruit and historically the British Navy used large quantities of lemons to counteract scurvy on sea voyages.

In traditional Oriental medicine, Lemon Essential Oil is described energetically as cool and dry and is believed to clear heat, dampness, and phlegm. It has also been described as benefitting the Intellect and easing worries.

When using a new essential oil, we recommend you perform a skin patch test on a small area of skin. A skin patch test will help you determine if you have a sensitivity or allergic reaction to a particular essential oil. Essential oils can be applied directly on the skin depending on the constituents of the oil or diluted with a base oil. Lemon Essential Oil can cause severe sunburn if applied to the skin prior to exposure to ultraviolet light. Therefore, it should never be used on the skin or in applications where steam may deposit it on the skin for 12 hours prior to exposure to sunlight or tanning lamps. Due to the potency of essential oils, a few drops diluted with a base oil like almond oil is suitable for therapeutic use. This product should not be applied to children undiluted.
