This not That: What Foods Should I Avoid During Dr. Nuzum's Two Week Detox Plan?

During a detox, it is important to nourish your body with the right foods to help revitalize your system as it cleanses itself of toxins and buildup. There are also a number of foods that you will want to avoid while cleansing.


Sugar doesn’t do anything for your body except for appeal to your taste buds. It is difficult for your body to process, it crystallizes in your joints causing aches and pains, and is what we refer to as “empty calories”. Avoid processed sugars, especially white cane sugar while you are detoxing. Natural sweeteners and those low on the glycemic index such as honey, raw maple syrup, coconut sugar and stevia can be used in moderation.

Dried and canned fruit are higher in sugar than fresh fruit and should also be avoided. Fruit juice has very high amounts of sugar and some even have added sugar and therefor should also be eliminated from your diet.To be as gentle on your system as possible, avoid fresh fruits high in sugar like figs and oranges.


Oils that have a low smoking point like olive oil and safflower oil should be avoided when cooking anything at high heat. Shortening and vegetable and corn oil should be eliminated from your diet entirely during and after your cleanse. They contain large amounts of Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids that are toxic to your body when eaten in excess. High saturated fat containing oils such as coconut and pumpkin oil can be used sparingly but be conscious of not over consuming them during your cleansing period.

Grains and Carbohydrates

Grains and carbohydrates are the most complex foods for our bodies to break down. They cause spikes in blood sugar and when their energy is not used, the carbohydrates convert to sugar. Refined grains have caused many people to have insulin resistance, high blood pressure and heart attacks. Wheat and gluten overwork the liver and cause distress to your digestion. Eliminating carbohydrates such as pasta, potatoes, rice and breads will allow your digestive system time to rest and reset during your two week detox.

Animal Products

Going meatless for your detox would allow for your digestive system to take a much needed break but this is not available to everyone. If you are going to partake in meat, choose poultry and lean proteins such as chicken and turkey. During the two week detox it is best to avoid all red meat, pork and most fish. Red meat has a tendency to reside in your colon and putrefy over time. Many fish contain heavy metals and toxins as a result of the state of our polluted waters. Consider adding more beans and legumes to your diet to supplement for your protein and to take it easier on your digestive track.

Limit your dairy intake. Most adults have a slight allergy to dairy and can cause reactions that you are attempting to detoxify from your body such as inflammation and headaches. If you do choose to have small amounts of dairy opt for raw and unpasteurized cultures that have active enzymes that benefit your gut bacteria. You can substitute any animal based dairy products with nut-milk substitutes. However, read your labels and avoid milk alternatives that include carrageenan.

Stimulants and Processed Foods

Detoxing is a great time to make not only temporary diet changes, but lifestyle changes as well. Dr. Nuzum recommends taking this time to cut out coffee, alcohol, smoking and other stimulants to renew your vitality for life and move forward into a new and healthy you. Prepackaged and processed foods contain typically contain high amounts of salt and incomprehensible ingredients that are toxic to your body over long periods of time. Commit to eating only whole, natural foods and eliminate processed foods from your home and from your diet now and into the future.

  • Vegetable oil, safflower oil or corn oil
  • Potatoes (fried, mashed, or French fries)
  • Processed foods
  • Figs, raisins and all canned and dried fruits
  • Red meats
  • Most fish
  • Coffee
  • Pork products
  • Canned foods (not even vegetables or fruits)
  • Processed sugar or regular sugar. You can use honey, raw maple syrup and stevia in moderation.
  • MSG, maltodextrin, carrageenan (found in many nut milks), and high fructose corn syrup
